Meet the gal behind

Carleen

BASED: Brooklyn, New York

ESTABLISHED: 2012

MISSION: Committed to domestic manufacturing.

Founded by Kelsy Parkhouse in 2012, Carleen US is a Brooklyn-based womenswear collection with a commitment to domestic manufacturing.

The founding collection drew inspiration from the handmade American quilt, a textile that continues to inform the brand’s aesthetic. Back when good quality fabrics were hard to come by, the warmth provided by handcrafted quilted blankets made from repurposed scraps of material became a necessity for early American settlers. The brand has re-worked this American classic by using brightly coloured flour and potato sacks from the 30s and 40s (found in antique shops and flea markets) stitched in diamond sequences to create dresses, skirts and jackets.

Kelsy also draws influence from her Southern California upbringing, folk-art motifs, fine art inspiration. She is committed to domestic manufacturing and all items are handmade and produced in New York.

The line has enjoyed multiple mentions on Vogue.com, and a pair of denim trousers from the Fall '14 collection were modelled by Kendall Jenner in the January issue of the magazine! Doesn’t get much better than that!

WHY WE LOVE THEM:

We love the history and labour of love behind each of the brand’s pieces. Combining vintage fabric with modern stitching creates one of a kind pieces that truly stand out!
