Gratitude - the only resolution you need
As I was listing some resolutions to follow this year (being more present, deepening my relationships, managing anxiety etc), I realized that every one of the items listed could be solved by simply incorporating more gratitude into my everyday life. It is incredible how powerful one simple act can be. So instead of coming up with a long list of resolutions that are often vague and hard to follow, I am taking a different approach this year. This year I plan to focus on one key practice - expressing gratitude - until it becomes a daily habit! Who’s with me?!
"There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” -- Albert Einstein
Here are a few ways gratitude can help you succeed this year:
Several studies have indicated that practicing gratitude on a regular basis can lead to psychological and physical benefits. Gratitude can increase feelings of vitality and optimism while also giving your overall health a boost. This can have a tremendous effect on your personal and professional goals. Think about it, the more vibrant, healthy and alive you feel, the more energy you will have available to dedicate to your goals. Feeling optimistic may also cause you to take more leaps of faith and help you step outside your comfort zone more often, opening yourself up to a world of opportunities!
Shift in Focus
As I’m sure we have all experienced at one point in our lives, negative thinking can quickly lead to a downhill spiral. The more you focus or place energy on negative feelings (such as daily inconveniences, life setbacks or obstacles) the more they will grow in your mind and continue to consume your thoughts and energy (creating a classic snowball effect). The next time you are feeling anxious, overwhelmed our stressed, take a few minutes to interrupt your negative train of thinking and focus on the things going right. A few minutes of gratitude will help to quickly turn things around. You will immediately begin to shift your mood and mindset. As you begin to pay attention to the positives, you may also start to discover that your successes will start to grow.
Pass it on
A great way to deepen relationships is to find ways to thank and show gratitude to your friends, family and colleagues. The next time you feel thankful for a friend - tell them! You will both get a boost from feeling appreciated and feel even more motivated to do a better job. Gratitude can help to define our priorities and focus on things that truly matter, leading to healthier and happier relationships.
Making gratitude a habit not only feels amazing but it can also lead to a host of benefits in your personal and professional life. One simple way to start incorporating gratitude into your daily life is to end each day writing down three things that you are thankful for and happy with. Keep a journal on your nightstand and make it a nightly ritual before getting into bed. It may seem silly at first but soon enough you will be looking for more ways to show appreciation and the process of incorporating gratitude into your everyday life will come naturally.
