Updating your skincare routine for fall

It doesn’t get much better than a beautiful, sunny autumn day! The cooler temperatures bring cozy sweaters, delicious pumpkin spice lattes and vibrant colour. The change of season is a great time to make tweaks to your skincare routine. No need to completely overhaul your routine (we strongly believe that consistency is key in order to see results), simply switching up a few products to better reflect the season will make a difference.

Here are some suggestions to keep your skin looking its best throughout the cooler months.

Boost Hydration

When the weather begins to cool down, its important to add hydrating products that will seal in moisture. If you are using a light weight moisturizer switch to a moisturizing cream with a thicker consistency. You may want to add a treatment oil (lately I have really been liking these treatment oils ) before applying moisturizer for added hydration. Fall is a great time to add an overnight moisturizing mask to your routine. After a chilly day, layer the mask over your serum and head to bed. Use once or twice a week and wake up to soft and glowing skin.

Heat, chlorine and salt water in the summer can lead to dull, flaky skin. Exfoliation is imperative when it comes to repairing and brightening the complexion. Regular exfoliation will help to lift skin discolouration (such as sun spots and acne scars), remove dull, tired, dry skin and encourage fresher, plumper cells to form. Treat yourself to a daily body scrub and add a well-formulated facial scrub or an at-home exfoliating peel to your routine.

Gel and foam cleansers that were used during the summer months can be drying come fall. A better alternative is to use a cleansing oil morning and night. The cleansing oil will work to remove makeup and impurities without stripping your skin, while also delivering much needed hydration. We can’t get enough of this one.

With cooler temperatures we often think the sun isn’t as harmful and applying SPF starts to slip. While UVB rays aren’t as strong as in the summer months, UVA rays (which cause premature aging and skin cancer) are just as strong in the fall. Its important to remember to apply sunscreen (with an SPF of 20 or more) every morning to protect the skin.

Hands / Lips

Don’t neglect your hands and lips. To prevent dry, cracked cuticles or lips that can come with the cold weather, add a hand cream and lip balm to your routine.

Include an illuminating moisturizer or eye cream to brighten and highlight for overall dewy, healthy looking skin and to extend your summer glow. A luminizer will catch and reflect light to brighten areas the sun would naturally highlight.

Clean your make-up and brushes

Fall is the perfect time to go through your make-up drawer and get rid of those items you have been using for months. Take advantage by changing them for rich and vibrant colour palettes. Its also a great time to clean your brushes. Dirt, oil and bacteria can get trapped in the bristles leading to clogged pores and breakouts. Washing your brushes frequently should be a regular part of your routine. Adding an anti-bacterial daily brush cleaner designed to quickly remove light traces of makeup between applications is an easy way to do it!
