Celebrating International Women’s Day

“When women move forward, the world moves with them.”

On March 8th, individuals came together to celebrate the achievements and accomplishments of women around the world. Not only is it a day to honour women but it also shines a light and raises awareness for the work still needing to be done. This year’s International Women's Day campaign theme is #beboldforchange. The theme is asking all of us to take bold actions towards women advancements and equality for a more gender inclusive world.

In several parts of the world, women lack access to necessities and rights. As a result, it is extremely challenging for them to become a part of the official labour market or to start small businesses as entrepreneurs (according to the International Monetary Fund). Statistics report that women on average earn 79% of a man's yearly salary. This is extremely apparent in the fashion industry.  80% of garment workers are women between the ages of 18 and 24. Many of these women earn significantly less than men, face discrimination, poor working conditions and have limited opportunities for job security or growth.

This needs to change.

One of the reasons we were inspired to start Fjordlife was to provide a platform to highlight the designers (majority of them women) who are working to change this. Many of the designers we have partnered with are shaking up the fashion and beauty industry by improving production standards and changing the narrative on how we shop. Whether that’s through investing in social development programs, having full control over the supply chain, building their own production facilities or hiring women and paying them a fair wage (which not only benefits their families but also their communities).

There are many tools available to consumers to make the right choices in purchasing ethical goods. The Good Trade is a great resource for ethical fashion and fair trade recommendations. We also encourage you to reach out to us assistant@fjordlife.ca if you have any questions or need further information on any of the products we carry.

Fjordlife would not have been possible without the support we have received from so many wonderful women. From our partners, mentors, friends, family and wonderful community, who inspire us everyday to keep pushing forward.

Here’s to you and women everywhere!
